abstract = "Trapped ions in micro-cavities constitute a key platform for advancing quantum information processing and quantum networking. By providing an efficient light–matter interface within a compact architecture, they serve as highly efficient quantum nodes with strong potential for a scalable quantum network. However, in such systems, ion trapping stability is often compromised by surface charging effects, and nearby dielectric materials are known to cause a dramatic increase in the ion heating rate by several orders of magnitude. These challenges significantly hinder the practical implementation of ion trap systems integrated with micro-cavities. To overcome these limitations, we present the design and fabrication of metal-shielded fiber-cavity mirrors, enabling the stable realization of ion trap systems integrated with fiber cavities. Using this method, we constructed a needle ion trap integrated with a fiber Fabry–Pérot cavity and successfully achieved stable trapping of a single ion within the cavity. The measured ion heating rate was reduced by more than an order of magnitude compared with unshielded configurations. This work establishes a key technique toward fully integrated ion–photon interfaces for scalable quantum networks.",

abstract = "hotons are essential for interconnecting quantum systems in quantum networks, where polarization is a widely used degree of freedom for encoding quantum information. However, frequency bands suitable for different quantum systems often do not align. While polarization-preserving quantum frequency conversion (PPQFC) is essential for interconnecting heterogeneous quantum systems, existing solutions lack cross-band capability between ultraviolet (UV) and near-infrared (NIR) regimes. Here, we experimentally demonstrated a PPQFC method that exploits the low-loss, self-phase stabilization of polarization and facilitates cross-band achromatic waveguide coupling. Specifically, we demonstrated the polarization- preserving quantum frequency conversion from UV 369.5 nm to visible 580 nm with infrared pumping at 1018 nm, achieving long-term fidelity of 97.6\% ± 1.0\% at wavelengths relevant to trapped ions 171Yb+ and solid-state 153Eu3+:Y2SiO5 quantum systems. This work demonstrates a versatile PPQFC solution for future heterogeneous quantum networks.",

abstract = "Recently, large-scale trapped ion systems have been realized in experiments for quantum simulation and quantum computation. They are the simplest systems for dynamical stability and parametric resonance. In this model, the Mathieu equation plays the most fundamental role for us to understand the stability and instability of a single ion. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of trapped ions with the Coulomb interaction based on the Hamiltonian equation. We show that the many-body interaction will not influence the phase diagram for instability. Then, the dynamics of this model in the large damping limit will also be analytically calculated using few trapped ions. Furthermore, we find that in the presence of modulation, synchronization dynamics can be observed, showing an exchange of velocities between distant ions on the left side and on the right side of the trap. These dynamics resemble that of the exchange of velocities in Newton’s cradle for the collision of balls at the same time. These dynamics are independent of their initial conditions and the number of ions. As a unique feature of the interacting Mathieu equation, we hope this behavior, which leads to a quasi-periodic solution, can be measured in current experimental systems. Finally, we have also discussed the effect of anharmonic trapping potential, showing the desynchronization during the collision process. It is hoped that the dynamics in this many-body Mathieu equation with damping may find applications in quantum simulations. This model may also find interesting applications in dynamics systems as a pure mathematical problem, which may be beyond the results in the Floquet theorem.",

abstract = "Advances in research in fields such as quantum information and quantum chemistry require subtle methods for trapping particles, including ions, neutral atoms, and molecules. Here, we propose a hybrid ion-trapping method that combines a Paul trap with optical tweezers. This trap incorporates both the deep-potential characteristic of the Paul trap and the micromotion-free nature of the optical dipole trap. By modulating the optical dipole trap synchronously with the radio-frequency voltage of the Paul trap, the alternating electrical force in the trap center is fully counteracted, and the micromotion temperature of a cold trapped ion can reach the nanokelvin scale, while the trap depth exceeds 300 K. These features will allow cold collisions between an ion and an atom in the 𝑠-wave regime and stably trap the produced molecular ion in the cold hybrid system. This provides a unique platform for probing the interactions between the ions and the surrounding neutral particles and enables the investigation of new reaction pathways and reaction products in the cold regime.",

By analyzing the second-order correlation function of the cavity emission, temperature measurements from near the motional ground state to over tens of millikelvin can be achieved and motion patterns of different frequencies can be characterized. By incorporating a unique vibration isolation structure, the system enables the fiber-optic microcavity (with a finesse of 8000) to remain resonant with the laser for several minutes even without active feedback. Furthermore, we demonstrate active cavity length stabilization using the Pound–Drever–Hall method, which significantly suppresses low-frequency vibrations and enables the cavity length to remain stable for several days. abstract = "In experiments with atomic qubits encoded in the hyperfine levels of cold atoms or ions, the generation and control of multiple laser frequencies are often required for laser cooling and qubit manipulation. In this work, we demonstrate a laser system that integrates laser cooling, qubit initialization and detection, and Raman operations into a single setup, utilizing fiber laser technology and nonlinear optics. Specifically, a 369 nm laser for preparing and detecting 171Yb+ ions, and a 554 nm laser for qubit Raman manipulation, are generated by modulating a seed laser at 1108 nm through a fiber electro-optic modulator (EOM), amplified by a Yb-doped fiber amplifier, and then converted to 369 nm and 554 nm using two sequentially placed periodically-poled nonlinear crystals. This method offers significant flexibility and scalability, as different laser frequencies can be generated by adding specific radio-frequency signals to the electronic system, without altering the optical setup. The switching time between laser frequency channels is measured at 6.5 ns. With a modulation bandwidth of 20 GHz, this approach can accommodate the hyperfine splittings of various ion species. Overall, This scheme optimizes the optical configuration for atom and ion operations, minimizes insertion losses, and provides an efficient multi-channel laser frequency generation solution, making it highly beneficial for atomic and ionic quantum information experiments.",

abstract = "Large-scale programmable trapped ion hardware, featuring high gate fidelity and long coherence times, is promising for realizing a practical fault-tolerant quantum computer. However, individual addressing (IA) methods, which are useful for implementing programmable gates in near-term quantum devices, can lead to undesired errors between the target ions and neighboring ions. In this work, we present a low-crosstalk optical addressing system based on multiple optical objectives and acousto-optic deflectors (AODs) with a symmetrical configuration. Two counterpropagating Raman operation beams are both tightly focused, generating an overlapping spot with a waist radius of approximately 1 μ⁢m, to address the target ion. As a result, IA crosstalk, characterized by Rabi-rate crosstalk on the spectator ion, is measured to be 1.19⁢(5) ×10−3, with the two ions separated by approximately 5.5 μ⁢m. This low-crosstalk optical addressing system holds promise for high-fidelity entangling operations, and the symmetrically configured AODs in our method can be readily extended to two dimensions to address a two-dimensional ion crystal.",

abstract = "We present a novel micro-fabrication technique for creating concave surfaces on the endfacets of photonic crystal fibers. A fiber fusion splicer is used to generate arc discharges to melt and reshape the fiber endfacet. This technique can produce large spherical concave surfaces with roughness as low as 0.12 nm in various types of photonic crystal fibers. The deviation of fabricated surface and a spherical profile in the region of 70 {\textmu}m in diameter is less than 50 nm. The center of the concave surface and the fiber mode field are highly coincident with a deviation less than 500 nm. Finesse measurements have shown that a Fabry-P{\'e}rot cavity composed of the fiber fabricated using this method and a plane mirror maintains finesse of 20000. This method is easy to replicate, making it a practical and efficient approach to fabricate concave surface on fibers for open-access fiber Fabry-P{\'e}rot cavities.",

abstract = "Phase-coherent multi-tone lasers play a critical role in atomic, molecular, and optical physics. Among them, the Raman opeartion laser for manipulating atomic hyperfine qubits requires gigahertz bandwidth and low phase noise to retain long-term coherence. Raman operation lasers generated by directly modulated and frequency-multipled infrared lasers are compact and stable but lack feedback control to actively suppress the phase noise, which limits their performance in practical applications. In this work, we employ a fiber electro-optical modulator driven by a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) to modulate a monochromatic laser and employ a second-harmonic generation process to convert it to the visible domain, where the beat note of the Raman operation laser is stabilized by controlling the output frequency of VCO with a digital phase-locked loop (PLL). The low-frequency phase noise is effectively suppressed compared to the scheme without active feedback and it reaches -80 dBc/Hz@5 kHz with a 20 kHz loop bandwidth. Furthermore, this compact and robust scheme effectively reduces the system's complexity and cost, which is promising for extensive application in atomic, molecular, and optical physics.",

abstract = "With an extremely high dimensionality, the spatial degree of freedom of entangled photons is a key tool for quantum foundation and applied quantum techniques. To fully utilize the feature, the essential task is to experimentally characterize the multiphoton spatial wave function including the entangled amplitude and phase information at different evolutionary stages. However, there is no effective method to measure it. Quantum state tomography is costly, and quantum holography requires additional references. Here, we introduce quantum Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing to perform efficient and reference-free measurement of the biphoton spatial wave function. The joint probability distribution of photon pairs at the back focal plane of a microlens array is measured and used for amplitude extraction and phase reconstruction. In the experiment, we observe that the biphoton amplitude correlation becomes weak while phase correlation shows up during free-space propagation. Our work is a crucial step in quantum physical and adaptive optics and paves the way for characterizing quantum optical fields with high-order correlations or topological patterns.",

abstract = "Self-testing allows one to characterise quantum systems under minimal assumptions. However, existing schemes rely on quantum nonlocality and cannot be applied to systems that are not entangled. Here, we introduce a robust method that achieves self-testing of individual systems by taking advantage of contextuality. The scheme is based on the simplest contextuality witness for the simplest contextual quantum system---the Klyachko-Can-Binicio{\u g}lu-Shumovsky inequality for the qutrit. We establish a lower bound on the fidelity of the state and the measurements as a function of the value of the witness under a pragmatic assumption on the measurements. We apply the method in an experiment on a single trapped 40Ca+ using randomly chosen measurements and perfect detection efficiency. Using the observed statistics, we obtain an experimental demonstration of self-testing of a single quantum system.",

abstract = "We experimentally investigate deep reinforcement learning (DRL) as an artificial intelligence approach to control a quantum system. We verify that DRL explores fast and robust digital quantum controls with operation time analytically hinted by shortcuts to adiabaticity. In particular, the protocol’s robustness against both over-rotations and off-resonance errors can still be achieved simultaneously without any priori input. For the thorough comparison, we choose the task as single-qubit flipping, in which various analytical methods are well-developed as the benchmark, ensuring their feasibility in the quantum system as well. Consequently, a gate operation is demonstrated on a trapped 171Yb+ ion, significantly outperforming analytical pulses in the gate time and energy cost with hybrid robustness, as well as the fidelity after repetitive operations under time-varying stochastic errors. Our experiments reveal a framework of computer-inspired quantum control, which can be extended to other complicated tasks without loss of generality.",

Quantum gates induced by geometric phases, which depend only on global properties of the evolution paths, have built-in noise-resilience features. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate nonadiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates on two dark paths in a trapped 171Yb+ ion based on four-level systems with resonant drives. We confirm the implementation with measured gate fidelity through both quantum process tomography and randomized benchmarking methods. Meanwhile, we find that nontrivial holonomic two-qubit quantum gates can also be realized within current experimental technologies. Compared with previous implementations, our experiments share both the advantages of fast nonadiabatic evolution and robustness against systematic errors. Therefore, our experiments confirm a promising method for fast and robust holonomic quantum computation.",

In this work, we experimentally demonstrate that the combination of171Yb+ atomic sensors with adequately trained neural networks enables us to investigate target fields in distinct challenging scenarios. In particular, we characterize radio frequency (RF) fields in the presence of large shot noise, including the limit case of continuous data acquisition via single-shot measurements. Phase-coherent dichromatic radiation fields matching the energy level splitting are the key to realizing stimulated Raman transition. Here we demonstrate a flexible-tuning, spectrum-clean and fiber-compatible method to generate a highly phase-coherent and high-power multi-tone laser. This method features the utilization of a broadband fiber Mach–Zehnder modulator working at carrier suppression condition and second harmonic generation. We generate a multi-tone continuous-wave 532 nm laser with a power of 1.5 Watts and utilize it to manipulate the spin and motional states of a trapped 171Yb+ ion via stimulated Raman transition. For spin state manipulation, we acquire an effective Rabi frequency of 2π × 662.3 kHz. Due to the broad bandwidth of the fiber modulator and nonlinear crystal, the frequency gap between tones can be flexibly tuned. Benefiting from the features above, this method can manipulate 171Yb+ and 137Ba+ simultaneously in the multi-species ion trap and has potential to be widely applied in atomic, molecular and optical physics.",

abstract = "Spin defects in silicon carbide appear to be a promising tool for various quantum technologies, especially for quantum sensing. However, this technique has been used only at ambient pressure until now. Here, by combining this technique with diamond anvil cell, we systematically study the optical and spin properties of divacancy defects created at the surface of SiC at pressures up to 40 GPa. The zero-field-splitting of the divacancy spins increases linearly with pressure with a slope of 25.1 MHz/GPa, which is almost two-times larger than that of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond. The corresponding pressure sensing sensitivity is about 0.28 MPa/Hz–1/2. The coherent control of divacancy demonstrates that coherence time decreases as pressure increases. Based on these, the pressure-induced magnetic phase transition of Nd2Fe14B sample at high pressures was detected. These experiments pave the way to use divacancy in quantum technologies such as pressure sensing and magnetic detection at high pressures.",

abstract = "The Kibble-Zurek (KZ) mechanism is a universal framework that can in principle describe nonequilibrium phase transition phenomena in any system with the required symmetry properties. However, a conflicting phenomenon termed anti-KZ behavior has been reported in the study of ferroelectric phase transitions, in which slower driving results in more topological defects [S. M. Griffin et al., Phys. Rev. X 2, 041022 (2012)]. Although this finding is significant, related experimental work remains scarce. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate anti-KZ behavior under a noisy control field in three different quantum phase transition protocols using a single trapped 171Yb+ ion. The density of defects is studied as a function of the quench time and the noise intensity. We experimentally verify that the optimal quench time to minimize excitations scales as a universal power law of the noise intensity. Our work provides an experimental verification of anti-KZ behavior in a two-level system.",

They have also attracted the attention of physicists working in random matrix theory and quantum chaos for decades. Here we present an experimental observation of the lowest non-trivial Riemann zeros by using a trapped-ion qubit in a Paul trap, periodically driven with microwave fields. The waveform of the driving is engineered such that the dynamics of the ion is frozen when the driving parameters coincide with a zero of the real component of the zeta function. Scanning over the driving amplitude thus enables the locations of the Riemann zeros to be measured experimentally to a high degree of accuracy, providing a physical embodiment of these fascinating mathematical objects in the quantum realm.",

abstract = "Optical controls provided by lasers are the most important and essential techniques in trapped ion and cold atom systems. It is crucial to increase the optical accessibility of the setup to enhance these optical capabilities. Here, we present the design and construction of a new segmented-blade ion trap integrated with a compact glass vacuum cell, in place of the conventional bulky metal vacuum chamber. The distance between the ion and four outside surfaces of the glass cell is 15 mm, which enables us to install four high-numerical-aperture (NA) lenses (with two NA ⩽ 0.32 lenses and two NA ⩽ 0.66 lenses) in two orthogonal transverse directions, while leaving enough space for laser beams in the oblique and longitudinal directions. The high optical accessibility in multiple directions allows the application of small laser spots for addressable Raman operations, programmable optical tweezer arrays, and efficient fluorescence collection simultaneously. We have successfully loaded and cooled a string of 174Yb+ and 171Yb+ ions in the trap, which verifies the trapping stability. This compact high-optical-access trap setup not only can be used as an extendable module for quantum information processing but also facilitates experimental studies on quantum chemistry in a cold hybrid ion-atom system.",

abstract = "An experiment based on a trapped ytterbium ion validates the inertial theorem for the SU(2) algebra. The qubit is encoded within the hyperfine states of the atom and controlled by RF fields. The inertial theorem generates analytical solutions for non-adiabatically driven systems that are ‘accelerated’ slowly, bridging the gap between the sudden and adiabatic limits. These solutions are shown to be stable to small deviations, both experimentally and theoretically. By encoding a two-level system into hyperphine structure of a trapped ytterbium, we explore the high control over the system dynamics in order to validate range of applicability of the inertial theorem in our system. For large deviations from the inertial condition, the experimental results show that the phase remains accurate while the amplitude diverges, so the inertial theorem has good robustness in the phase estimate. As a result, we experimentally showed that the inertial solutions pave the way to rapid quantum control of closed, as well as open quantum systems.",

Here, we demonstrate nanosecond-scale two-dimensional stroboscopic pictures of a single trapped ion beyond the optical diffraction limit, by combining the main idea of ground-state depletion microscopy with quantum-state transition control in cold atoms. We achieve a spatial resolution up to 175 nm using a NA=0.1 objective in the experiment, which represents a more than tenfold improvement compared with direct fluorescence imaging. To show the potential of this method, we apply it to observe the secular motion of the trapped ion; we demonstrate a temporal resolution up to 50 ns with a displacement detection sensitivity of 10 nm. The readout of color center spin states with optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) technology is traditionally based on Stokes excitation, where the energy of the exciting laser is higher than that of the emission photons. Here, we investigate an unconventional approach using anti-Stokes excitation to detect the ODMR signal of silicon vacancy defect spin in silicon carbide, where the exciting laser has lower energy than the emitted photons. Laser power, microwave power and temperature dependence of the anti-Stokes excited ODMR are systematically studied, in which the behavior of ODMR contrast and linewidth is shown to be similar to that of Stokes excitation. However, the ODMR contrast is several times that of the Stokes excitation. Coherent control of silicon vacancy spin under anti-Stokes excitation is then realized at room temperature. The spin coherence properties are the same as those of Stokes excitation, but with a signal contrast that is around three times greater. To illustrate the enhanced spin readout contrast under anti-Stokes excitation, we also provide a theoretical model. The experiments demonstrate that the current anti-Stokes excitation ODMR approach has promising applications in quantum information processing and quantum sensing.",

Here we propose a scheme to realize the quantum walk with a single trapped ion where the Fock states provides the walk space and the zero-phonon state {\textbar}n=0⟩ serves as its natural boundary. Thus, our scheme offers an opportunity to investigate the dynamics of the bound states of the corresponding topological systems. In particular, the quench dynamics of the bound states can be extensively studied by tuning the bulk parameters and the local boundary operator, which are experimentally accessible. To suppress piezoelectric drift, a two-layer symmetrical structure is adopted for the piezoelectric actuator, and a 14.7 GHz tuning range is achieved. The short-term drift of the piezoelectric ceramics caused by temperature and creep is eliminated, and the long-term drift is 0.268 MHz/h when the Fabry–Pérot cavity is sealed in a chamber without a vacuum environment. The long-term frequency drift is mainly caused by stress release and is eliminated by compensating the cavity voltage with an open loop. Without the need for an external reference or a vacuum environment, the laser frequency stabilization system is greatly simplified, and it can be extended to wavelengths ranging from ultraviolet to infrared. Owing to its simplicity, stability, and large tuning range, it is applicable in cold atom and trapped ion experiments.",

abstract = "In research on hybrid quantum networks, visible or near-infrared frequency conversion has been realized. However, technical limitations mean that there have been few studies involving the ultraviolet band, and unfortunately the wavelengths of the rare-earth or alkaline-earth metal atoms or ions that are used widely in research on quantum information are often in the UV band. Therefore, frequency conversion of the ultraviolet band is very important. In this paper, we demonstrate a quantum frequency conversion between ultraviolet and visible wavelengths by fabricating waveguides in a period-poled MgO:LiTaO3 crystal with a laser writing system, which will be used to connect the wavelength of the dipole transition of 171Yb$+$ at 369.5 nm and the absorption wavelength of Eu3$+$ at 580 nm in a solid-state quantum memory system. An external conversion efficiency of 0.85\\% and a signal-to-noise ratio of greater than 500 are realized with a pumping power of 3.28 W at 1018 nm. Furthermore, we complete frequency conversion of the classical polarization state by means of a symmetric optical setup based on the fabricated waveguide, and the process fidelity of the conversion is (96.13 {\textpm} 0.021)\\%. This converter paves the way for constructing a hybrid quantum network and realizing a quantum router in the ultraviolet band in the future.",

abstract = "Quantum computation with quantum gates induced by geometric phases is regarded as a promising strategy in fault-tolerant quantum computation, owing to its robustness against operational noise. However, because of the parametric restrictions in previous schemes, the main robust advantage of holonomic quantum gates is reduced. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a solution scheme, obtaining nonadiabatic holonomic single-qubit quantum gates with optimal control in a trapped 171Yb+ ion based on a three-level system with resonant driving, which also has the advantages of rapid evolution and convenient implementation. Compared with previous geometric gates and conventional dynamical gates, the superiority of our scheme is that it is more robust against control amplitude errors, which is confirmed by the gate infidelity as measured by both quantum-process tomography and random benchmarking methods. In addition, we outline how nontrivial two-qubit holonomic gates can also be realized using currently available experimental technology. Thus, our experiment confirms the feasibility of this robust and fast holonomic quantum-computation strategy.",

The sensor is a compacted device lasing around 1535 nm by external optical pumping. The acoustic pressure acting on the sensor disturbs the emitted laser frequency, which is subsequently transformed to beat signals through a delay-arm interferometer, and directly detected by a photo-detector. In this configuration, the sensing device exhibits a high sensitivity of 2.6 V/Pa and a noise equivalent acoustic signal level of 230 \\μPa/Hz1/2 at a frequency of 4 kHz. Experimental results provide a wide frequency response from 100 Hz to 18 kHz. As the sensor works at communication wavelength and the output laser can be electrically tuned in the 10 nm range, a multi-sensor network can be easily constructed with the dense wavelength division multiplexing devices. Extra lasers or demodulators are unnecessary thus the proposed sensor is low cost and easy fabrication. The proposed sensor shows broad applications prospect in remote oil and gas leakage exploration, photo-acoustic spectrum detection, and sound source location.",

In the standard theory of communication, it is assumed that the communication network is embedded in a classical spacetime, where the relative order of different nodes is well defined. One of the most interesting approaches to solving this hypothesis is to connect the problem with the spectrum of the physical Hamiltonian of a quantum system. However, none of the proposed quantum Hamiltonians has been experimentally feasible. Here we report an experiment using a Floquet method to identify the first nontrivial zero of the Riemann ζ function and the first two zeros of Pólya's function. Through properly designed periodically driving functions, the zeros of these functions are characterized by the occurrence of crossings of quasienergies when the dynamics of the system is frozen. The experimentally obtained zeros are in good agreement with their exact values. Our study provides the experimental realization of the Riemann zeros in a quantum system, which may provide insights into the connection between the Riemann function and quantum physics.",

abstract = "Quantum thermodynamics aims at investigating both the emergence and the limits of the laws of thermodynamics from a quantum mechanical microscopic approach. In this scenario, thermodynamic processes with no heat exchange, namely, adiabatic transformations, can be implemented through quantum evolutions in closed systems, even though the notion of a closed system is always an idealization and approximation. Here, we begin by theoretically discussing thermodynamic adiabatic processes in open quantum systems, which evolve non-unitarily under decoherence due to its interaction with its surrounding environment. From a general approach for adiabatic non-unitary evolution, we establish heat and work in terms of the underlying Liouville superoperator governing the quantum dynamics. As a consequence, we derive the conditions that an adiabatic open-system quantum dynamics implies in the absence of heat exchange, providing a connection between quantum and thermal adiabaticity. Moreover, we determine families of decohering systems exhibiting the same maximal heat exchange, which imply in classes of thermodynamic adiabaticity in open systems. We then approach the problem experimentally using a hyperfine energy-level quantum bit of an Ytterbium 171Yb+ trapped ion, which provides a work substance for thermodynamic processes, allowing for the analysis of heat and internal energy throughout a controllable engineered dynamics.",

Quantum thermodynamics in adiabatic open systems and its trapped-ion experimental realization为题8月26日发表在国际学术期刊《npj Quantum Information》上。 The present work would be one of the very few, and probably the most convincing, theoretical and experimental discussion on the relation between thermodynamical adiabatic processes and quantum adiabatic processed in open quantum systems (对于开放量子系统的热力学绝热过程和量子绝热过程之间的关系,该工作是目前为数不多的,而且可能是最有说服力的理论和实验讨论之一)”。本成果提供了一个精确研究量子热力学问题的囚禁离子实验平台。 中科院量子信息重点实验室已毕业博士研究生胡长康为论文第一作者。该工作得到了科技部、国家基金委、中国科学院、安徽省以及博士后科学基金的资助。",

abstract = "Solid-state color centers with manipulatable spin qubits and telecom-ranged fluorescence are ideal platforms for quantum communications and distributed quantum computations. In this work, we coherently control the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center spins in silicon carbide at room temperature, in which telecom-wavelength emission is detected. We increase the NV concentration sixfold through optimization of implantation conditions. Hence, coherent control of NV center spins is achieved at room temperature, and the coherence time T2 can be reached to around 17.1 μs. Furthermore, an investigation of fluorescence properties of single NV centers shows that they are room-temperature photostable single-photon sources at telecom range. Taking advantage of technologically mature materials, the experiment demonstrates that the NV centers in silicon carbide are promising platforms for large-scale integrated quantum photonics and long-distance quantum networks.",

abstract = "The geometric phase is regarded as a promising strategy in fault tolerance quantum information processing (QIP) domain due to its phase only depending on the geometry of the path executed. However, decoherence caused by environmental noise will destroy the geometric phase. Traditional dynamic decoupling sequences can eliminate dynamic dephasing but can not reduce residual geometric dephasing, which is still vital for high-precision quantum manipulation. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate effective suppression of residual geometric dephasing with modified dynamic decoupling schemes, using a single trapped 171Yb+ ion. The experiment results show that the modified schemes can reduce dephasing rate up to more than one order of magnitude compared with traditional dynamic decoupling schemes, when residual geometric dephasing dominates. Besides, we also investigate the impact of intensity and correlation time of the low-frequency noise on coherence of the quantum system. And we confirm these methods can be used in many cases.",

abstract = "Validity conditions for the adiabatic approximation are useful tools to understand and predict the quantum dynamics. Remarkably, the resonance phenomenon in oscillating quantum systems has challenged the adiabatic theorem. In this scenario, inconsistencies in the application of quantitative adiabatic conditions have led to a sequence of new approaches for adiabaticity. Here, by adopting a different strategy, we introduce a validation mechanism for the adiabatic approximation by driving the quantum system to a non-inertial reference frame. More specifically, we begin by considering several relevant adiabatic approximation conditions previously derived and show that all of them fail by introducing a suitable oscillating Hamiltonian for a single quantum bit (qubit). Then, by evaluating the adiabatic condition in a rotated non-inertial frame, we show that all of these conditions, including the standard adiabatic condition, can correctly describe the adiabatic dynamics in the original frame, either far from resonance or at a resonant point. Moreover, we prove that this validation mechanism can be extended for general multi-particle quantum systems, establishing the conditions for the equivalence of the adiabatic behavior as described in inertial or non-inertial frames. In order to experimentally investigate our method, we consider a hyperfine qubit through a single trapped Ytterbium ion Yb-171+, where the ion hyperfine energy levels are used as degrees of freedom of a two-level system. By monitoring the quantum evolution, we explicitly show the consistency of the adiabatic conditions in the non-inertial frame.",

abstract = "Suppressing undesired nonunitary effects is a major challenge in quantum computation and quantum control. In this paper, by considering the adiabatic dynamics in the presence of a surrounding environment, we theoretically and experimentally analyze the robustness of adiabaticity in open quantum systems. More specifically, by considering a decohering scenario, we exploit the validity conditions of the adiabatic approximation as well as its sensitiveness to the resonance situation, which typically harm adiabaticity in closed systems. As an illustration, we implement an oscillating Landau-Zener Hamiltonian, which shows that decoherence may drive the resonant system with high fidelities to the adiabatic behavior of open systems. Moreover we also implement the adiabatic quantum algorithm for the Deutsch problem, where a distinction is established between the open system adiabatic density operator and the target pure state expected in the computation process. Preferred time windows for obtaining the desired outcomes are then analyzed. We experimentally realize these systems through a single trapped ytterbium ion 171Yb+, where the ion hyperfine energy levels are used as degrees of freedom of a two-level system, with both driven field and decohering strength efficiently controllable.",

abstract = "Defects in silicon carbide have been explored as promising spin systems in quantum technologies. However, for practical quantum metrology and quantum communication, it is critical to achieve on-demand single spin-defect generation. In this work, we present the generation and characterization of shallow silicon vacancies in silicon carbide by using different implanted ions and annealing conditions. The conversion efficiency of a silicon vacancy of helium ions is shown to be higher than that by carbon and hydrogen ions in a wide implanted fluence range. Furthermore, after optimizing the annealing conditions, the conversion efficiency can be increased more than 2 times. Due to the high density of the generated ensemble defects, the sensitivity of sensing a static magnetic field can be reached as high as ηB≈23.5μT/Hz, which is about 9 times smaller than previous results. By carefully optimizing implanted conditions, we further show that a single silicon vacancy array can be generated with a high conversion efficiency of about 80\\%. The results pave the way for using an on-demand-generated single silicon vacancy for quantum information processing and quantum photonics.",

However, unlike NV centred nanodiamonds easily obtained by detonation, man-made synthesis of ultrafine SiV nanodiamonds is a key challenge. Here, we provide a controllably method for synthesizing nanodiamonds with one or few SiV emitters by reducing their size to the near minimum via oxygen plasma treatments. The size of nanodiamond is uniformly reduced from 11 to 1.7 nm under different treatment durations. It is found that nanodiamonds of a size between 2.1 and 4 nm contain fewer than three emitters. Size dependence of microstructure and photoluminescence suggests that SiV centres exist in the outer shell of nanodiamonds with diameter larger than {\textasciitilde}2 nm. This material has significant applications in nanophotonics platform, quantum communications and quantum photonics.",
