报告题目:Energy dissipation in graphene and nanotube nanomechanical resonators

报告摘要:

Owing to their ultra-low mass density, graphene and carbon nanotubes are interesting materials for the realization of nanomechanical resonators with potential applications in mass, force and spin sensing. Such applications crucially require low mechanical energy dissipation, that is, high quality factors, because mechanical sensing is limited by the thermal noise of the resonator.

We found that two phenomena conspire to lower quality factors extracted from spectral measurements. Firstly, energy dissipation in these systems strongly varies with the amplitude of vibrations.
Secondly, fluctuations of the resonant frequency significantly broaden spectral linewidths. Both for graphene and nanotube resonators, we found that quality factors exceed 1 million at cryogenic temperature, one order of magnitude higher than previously measured, and within reach of quality factors measured in much larger silicon-based and diamond-based microresonators. In addition to their ultra-low mass, graphene and nanotube mechanical resonators also feature very low energy dissipation: they possess all the necessary ingredients to become excellent sensors.
